Sportlov

In general, Swedes put great importance on getting outside and doing stuff.  The week-long school holiday, Sportlov, provides a winter opportunity for families to go out and play.  We had great plans to go north, rent a cabin and ski, but these plans fell apart and we stayed in and around Arvika.  This allowed me (Kurt) to work for three days but we were still able to get out for three days of winter fun.

VASSVIKA

Betsey’s previous post included one aspect of our Sunday at Vassvika.  Here is more…

As with just about any outdoor activity in Värmland, there is a fire over which korv (sausage) is grilled. The little three-sided shelter is always a popular hangout spot for kids.

Betsey and I made one run on this sled. It was my butt, not Betsey's, that punched through the sled after the first small jump.

Välfjallet

On Wednesday, we and Patric’s family drove about 40 minutes to Välfjallet, a smallish ski hill.  There are three t-bar lifts, the longest of which must go about 1/2 a mile up the hill.  My friend, Magnus, joined us in the afternoon.  I did not get many photos as it was very foggy and wet.  Despite that, the skiing was quite good and we had a great time.

Lily and Yarrow are both quite accomplished skiers and would gladly ski every day, if they could.

Ängsjön

On Friday, Ulf invited us to go ice fishing with him.  The girls complained mightily about being roused at 6 am when they didn’t have school.  It was a warm, bright, sunny day with no wind.  Ulf and I each caught one röding, Yarrow and Lily read alot, Betsey actually fished a bit and we all grilled sausage over a fire.  After fishing we visited a nearby cross country ski resort and had coffee.

The lake is called Ängsjön. A low fog literally poured onto the lake from the surrounding forested hills.

Look for the book in Yarrow's lap. She only fished when I asked her to hold the rod as I got my camera out of my backpack.

Not surprisingly, there is a little shelter, the Grill Hus, set up for the sole purpose of grilling sausage. There were over 40 cars parked at this resort in the middle of the forest, from all over Europe. Besides ski trails they have a wonderful sliding hill that was crawling with small children when we were there.

The Ulf photo is, indeed, amazing.

And I guess it’s not for nothing that I’ve always referred to you as “a real butt puncher.”

Nice shots. Overcast winter day, fast shutter and manual exposure. And sausage. We must not forget sausage.
